Bard Avaulta Mesh Product Atorneys

For years, women across the country have been suffering from two vaginal conditions that cause considerable pain and discomfort – pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI).

Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when a pelvic organ, such as the bladder, drops down, putting pressure on the walls of the vagina. POP most commonly arises in women whose muscles in their pelvic region have been worn down from childbirth or surgery. Women suffering from this condition frequently experience pain, discomfort, failed bladder functioning, and constipation.

Stress urinary incontinence afflicts approximately 11 million women across the country. This condition results in a sudden, involuntary loss of urine while laughing, sneezing, coughing, or exercising. It is most commonly caused by childbirth and can be made worse by the loss of estrogen that occurs during menopause.

Defective Transvaginal Mesh Products

Many medical companies have created a line of transvaginal mesh products to alleviate the symptoms of POP and SUI. These instruments are inserted into a woman’s pelvic region in order to bolster the weakened muscles in this area. One of the most commonly used transvaginal mesh devices is the Bard Avaulta Mesh product.

There have been over 1,000 reports of problems associated with these devices. These reports have come from medical professionals as well as the manufacturers of these products. As a result, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a public warning to both medical professionals and patients regarding the dangers of devices such as the Bard Avaulta Mesh product.

The side effects associated with these products include:

  • Erosion through vaginal epithelium
  • Infection
  • Pain
  • Urinary problems
  • Recurrence of prolapse and/or incontinence
  • Bowel, bladder, and blood vessel perforation during insertion

The FDA warning indicates that these transvaginal mesh products have caused a vastly diminished quality of life for many patients suffering from these side effects. The risks associated with these transvaginal mesh products are considered not worth the benefits the device provides to women suffering from POP and SUI.

Currently, there are only a few ways to correct the side effects caused by transvaginal mesh products. They are all serious procedures that come with their own risks:

  • Additional surgery
  • IV therapy
  • Blood transfusions
  • Drainage of hematomas or abscesses
