Four people were killed in an auto accident last night when an Amtrak train hit the vehicle. The accident occurred near the South Carolina-Georgia border. One of the accident victims was a 12-year-old child.
The gates had already been lowered to block traffic from the on-coming train. However, the car tried to go around the gate arms in an attempt to get across the tracks before the gate arrived. The vehicle became wedged onto the front of the Amtrak train, which pushed it down the track for approximately one mile. It took rescue workers more than three hours to pry the car off the train.
None of the passengers on board the train were injured in the car-train accident. They were eventually taken by bus to their destination in Savannah, Georgia.
