This past Sunday, an out-of-control pickup truck sped through a Target parking lot, striking six people. Four of the victims were children under the age of 10, and one of those children – a 7-year-old girl – did not survive. She was walking next to her mother when she was struck; the mother was only grazed. According to video footage, if the girl had taken another step, the truck might have missed her.
The driver has been identified as an 82-year-old man with diabetes. His family members insist that a seizure most likely caused him to lose control of the truck. The man was dazed after the auto accident, but not seriously injured. He has not yet been arrested, but authorities expect him to face manslaughter charges.
If a driver is incapable of safely operating a powerful vehicle like a truck, they should make the decision not to drive. Accidents are never intentional, especially when they are caused by freak circumstances like this one. However, it is still considered negligence to get behind the wheel of a car when you know you have a physical condition that could compromise your ability to drive.
