The City of El Paso, Texas has been nationally recognized for having one of the safest public bus systems in the United States. Unfortunately, that is starting to change, as more and more bus accidents are occurring – even situations where busses are striking pedestrians. Although El Paso’s bus accident rate remains below the national average, the number of accidents has been consistently rising since 2009.
In 2009, Sun Metro received a Gold Award – a national safety award that the system has worn like a badge of honor. But when accidents began happening more frequently in 2010, the award was downgraded to Silver, and in 2011, it sunk one degree lower to Bronze. In response to the continuing accident trend, Sun Metro has announced that they will roll out an education program at the end of the summer.
As a public service, city busses have an obligation to ensure the safety of their passengers. If you have been injured in a bus accident because of a reckless bus driver or a faulty bus, you may be entitled to compensation for your losses. Bus accident cases can be complex, since they often involve multiple entities and parties. If you decide to pursue a case, it is best to consult with an experienced bus accident attorney.
