The “Homer’s All-Purpose Bucket” mug, which has been sold at The Home Depot stores since October 2012, has recently been recalled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) for posing a fire hazard. According to the CPSC, the defective product may not be microwave safe, despite Home Depot’s initial claims to the contrary.
The silver-colored portion of the mug, which is meant to simulate a paint bucket handle, can spark if the mug is placed in a microwave oven. Approximately 3,700 of the orange coffee mugs have been sold at Home Depot stores for around $5. The mugs were made by a company called Mr. Christmas, Ltd. in China.
Customers who own the coffee mug are advised to cease using it and return it to a Home Depot store for a full refund. So far, no injuries have been reported related to the defective product, but the CPSC would like to hear from any customer who was injured or had a potentially dangerous incident with one of the bucket mugs. The CPSC Recall Notice for this product can be found here.
