On his way to deliver peat moss, a commercial truck driver collided into a bridge that was too short for his truck to fit under. The driver of the truck is claiming that the reason the semi-truck accident occurred is because he was following directions on his new GPS device.
The truck driver claims that the GPS device he was using failed to warn him in time for him to stop the truck. Commercial GPS systems are supposed to warn drivers if the truck they are in is too big for bridges or overpasses along their route.
The truck accident was so severe it peeled back the roof of the semi-truck trailer and bent the frame. Fortunately, neither the driver nor the passenger suffered a personal injury after the truck ran into the bridge; however, the trailer was totaled.
As GPS devices become more and more popular, it is inevitable that they will be blamed for auto accidents and truck accidents such as this. The manufacturer of the GPS device had not been contacted at the time of the police report, so it is uncertain whether the GPS unit in question was defective.
