Safety regulators with the State of California are fining a Disney contractor $60,995 after one of their workers suffered a serious personal injury while attempting to clean the Space Mountain attraction. The 37-year-old worker fell while cleaning the outside of Space Mountain last November, suffering broken bones.
According to the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health, HSG Inc. – a Los Angeles-based contractor – was found in violation of multiple safety regulations. One of its relevant negligent actions was a failure to ensure anchors were provided to workers. For this and other oversights, HSC was issued the $60,995 fine on Friday, April 19th, 2013.
HSG Inc. has two weeks during which to file an appeal. As for Disney, the mega-company has not yet decided whether it will appeal the penalty.
Contractors, like all employers, have a responsibility to abide by state and federal safety regulations, providing the safest working environment possible – especially in such a potentially dangerous line of work. When a company fails to take basic safety precautions and an employee is injured as a result, the company can and should be held responsible for the worker’s losses.
