A Massachusetts family was out trick-or-treating on Halloween night when a dog attacked their 21-month-old toddler. The dog bit her in the leg and caused several other injuries, including bruises and cuts to the face. The mother called the attack a “horrific experience” and worries that the owner will not face any charges.
Out of the 4.7 million annual dog bite victims in the United States, the vast majority are children, and over half of these children suffer injuries to the face. Dog bite losses cost over $1 billion every year, and over $300 million in damages are paid out by homeowners insurance.
Getting attacked by a dog is the fifth most common cause of emergency room visits for children. If the dog’s owner failed to properly secure their pet, or if their negligence in any way contributed to the circumstances of the attack, they can and should be held responsible.
