A school bus accident occurred this morning on East 69th Street in Ellenton, Florida, injuring eight children who were on their way to Virgil Mills Elementary School. The bus was carrying 59 total children when a 2012 Ford Focus struck the bus.
Seventeen children were evaluated on the scene, and eight were taken to local hospitals to treat apparently minor injuries. The school principal stated that each child will be sent in for a medical evaluation to make sure no latent injuries, such as brain injury or whiplash, are affecting them.
The 21-year-old driver of the Focus claims he has been having problems with the clutch of his car for around a week, and that it became jammed at the time of the accident. He could not come to a stop at a stop sign, even while using his emergency brake. He is being charged with failure to yield the right-of-way.
