Early Friday morning, five people were killed just outside of New Orleans when a driver who was traveling the wrong way on Interstate 10 crashed into their vehicle. According to Louisiana state police, the westbound lanes of I-10 were closed for nearly five hours after the car accident.
The man responsible for the crash was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-10 just before 3 A.M. when he crashed head-on with a vehicle carrying four people. The wrong-way car burst into flames, and all five people died at the scene.
To make matters worse, a tractor-trailer proceeded to sideswipe the wreck, causing a third vehicle to crash and hit the truck. Thankfully, the drivers of both the truck and the third vehicle only suffered minor injuries. Because of the fiery nature of the initial collision, the Jeep’s driver has not yet been identified. Investigators are still awaiting the outcome of an autopsy.
