According to police, a maintenance worker in St. Petersburg, Florida was seriously injured in the process of cleaning out a city garbage truck. The driver of the garbage truck closed the rear hydraulic door of the vehicle without realizing that the 70-year-old worker was still standing there. The door closed on the man’s upper body and caused severe trauma, sending him to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The truck accident is currently under investigation.
Garbage trucks present a unique danger because of their presence on residential streets, and the danger of working on one. Many injuries caused by garbage trucks happen to the workers themselves. When drivers do not properly communicate with the men working on the back of the truck, the consequences can be devastating. Additionally, it is estimated that more pedestrians and bicyclists are killed by garbage trucks than by any other kind of vehicle.
Many different types of injuries can occur to employees working in the back of a garbage truck, including:
- Broken bones
- Spinal cord injury
- Brain injury
