A pileup involving more than 40 vehicles on January 24 left three dead and 22 injured. The traffic accident occurred on I-94 just outside of Michigan City, Indiana, and involved both passenger vehicles and large trucks. Many of the smaller vehicles were pinned underneath the trailers of semi-trucks. Tragically, due to whiteout conditions, some stayed trapped for hours waiting for emergency crews.
The cause of this accident may have been a jackknifed trailer. Three teens who were witness to the accident report seeing the trailer jackknife and collide with another semi-truck at the front of the pileup. From there, multiple cars and truck added to the wreck.
