Federal regulators are investigating a recent railroad bridge collapse in Paulsboro, New Jersey. So far, it has been discovered that train crews recently reported signal problems with the bridge to Consolidated Rail Corp – the company that owns the railroad track and bridge. Investigators are still probing into further potential causes behind the bridge’s collapse, which led to a train accident that released a toxic cloud of vapor into the air.
The harmful fumes in at the scene of the train accident are still so concentrated that investigators cannot yet enter the site. A team from Consolidated Rail Corp. has reportedly been working at the site since Thursday. According to the Associated Press, over 100 residents of southern New Jersey must be kept out of their homes for several days while crews work to clear the hazardous gas that escaped from the ruptured train car.
The NTSB chairman spoke to press during a news conference on Sunday, stating: “This is a very complex operation. There is a lot of tonnage that goes over this bridge, and a lot of hazardous materials.” Residents in the 12-block zone that was evacuated will need to wait until at least Saturday to return to their homes.
