Laci Peterson’s family has dropped their wrongful death lawsuit against her former husband Scott Peterson. He is currently on death row for the murder of Laci and their unborn son.
Laci’s mother and stepfather withdrew the lawsuit in a Modesto, California court last week. The trial would have begun next month. Scott Peterson was convicted of both murders in 2004 and was sentenced to death in 2005. He is currently on death row at San Quentin State Prison in California. His lawyers have appealed his conviction to the state Supreme Court.
It is uncertain why Laci Peterson’s family has decided to drop their wrongful death lawsuit against her former husband. As of yet, they have not released a statement regarding their decision.
It is possible for a person who is convicted of murder to also face a wrongful death lawsuit in a civil court. If a person’s actions against another lead to the victim’s death and the actions were committed with an intention to inflict harm, the murderer is also guilty of wrongful death.
The murder case will result in criminal charges and consequences such as jail time, or in some cases, the death penalty. The wrongful death lawsuit, which must be filed by a member of the victim’s immediate family, will provide the victim’s family with financial compensation for their loss.
