Last month, several medical malpractice lawsuits were filed against Johns Hopkins Hospital, claiming the facility should have done more to monitor Dr. Nikita Levy, who secretly photographed and videotaped his patients during exams for his own purposes – a gross violation of his commitment to “above all, do no harm” as a doctor. Dr. Levy killed himself as soon as he learned he was being investigated.
The attorneys representing the affected patients are hoping the subpoena power that comes with a lawsuit will help them gather more information about why Levy’s crime was allowed to continue for so long at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Since 1988, over a thousand patients have been in Dr. Levy’s care. The vast majority didn’t know they might have been videotaped or photographed – much less what Levy allegedly did with the videos and images.
One attorney is currently representing 685 of Levy’s former patients, and is hoping to establish a class-action suit. The attorney stated: “All of [the former patients] I have seen thus far have told me they believe Johns Hopkins has failed in its duty to make sure that they’re safe.”
