In the State of Maine, many people are injured because of the negligence, recklessness, or intentional misconduct of an individual or company. These people have the opportunity to file a personal injury lawsuit with the help of a lawyer in their state. Unfortunately, not all people that call themselves lawyers are reputable or able to properly launch a lawsuit. Membership in the Maine State Bar Association is the reassurance needed to insure that an individual is qualified to present a court case in front of Maine courts.
The Maine State Bar Association is a professional and public service organization of more than 3,100 member lawyers licensed to practice in Maine. The Association promotes the honor, dignity and professionalism of lawyers, advances the knowledge, skills and interests of its members, and supports the public interest in a fair and effective system of justice.
The Maine State Bar Association was formally created by an act of the Maine Legislature on March 6, 1891 “for the purpose of promoting the interests of the legal profession and of instituting legal reforms.” Over time, the Maine Legislature enacted many of the measures that it proposed and supported. The Association improved the standards of admission to the Maine bar and the education requirements for Maine lawyers to ensure that every lawyer was completely competent to represent the public. Today, the Association is headquartered in Augusta. The Maine State Bar Association still works diligently to serve as an advocate for lawyers, the courts, and the public.
The Maine State Bar Association strives continually to develop programs offering products and services of significant or unique benefit to lawyers, as well as programs that are offered only to members of recognized groups. Subscriptions to the quarterly Maine Bar Journal and the nearly monthly MSBA newsletter, The Supplement, as well as weekly e-mailed news updates are sent to all members. The Maine Bar Journal is Maine’s premier source of both practical articles on substantive law and feature articles on topics of particular interest to Maine lawyers, as well as thought-provoking commentary.
