Maryland lawmaker Donald H. Dwyer Jr. admitted on Thursday that he had been drinking when the boat he was driving on Wednesday struck another boat full of children. Four of the children were injured in the boating accident; one of them, a 5-year-old girl, suffered the most serious injuries and was carried off to the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore by a medevac helicopter.
Hours after authorities announced that they were investigating whether or not alcohol was a factor in the boating accident, Dwyer spoke with reporters and expressed his remorse, asking for forgiveness. He stated that his blood alcohol content level was more than twice the legal limit for boat operation, and said that he deeply regrets his actions.
Nearby witnesses and other boaters all rushed to the scene of the accident to pull nine people – many of whom were injured and bloody from the collision – out of the water. Dwyer could face several criminal offenses for his dangerous lapse in judgment.
