It is now believed that as many as 14,000 people have received tainted steroid injections from the New England Compounding Center (NECC). The injections have been linked to a major outbreak of meningitis nationwide. According to health officials, patients have been warned to be on the lookout for symptoms over the next several months.
Officials investigating the NECC have discovered that the Massachusetts company apparently violated the licensing requirements under which they are allowed to manufacture products. Although NECC has already issued a recall on the steroid injections, NECC officials have not yet commented on this latest development in the investigation.
Officials from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, along with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, confirmed that fourteen patients have died so far from the meningitis outbreak, which involves a rare fungal form of the disease. Currently, 169 people are known to be infected with the disease.
If you are suffering from symptoms of meningitis after exposure to a steroid/cortisone injection, or if one of your loved ones has fallen ill after a steroid injection, ask your healthcare provider if NECC provided the medication. If so, you may be entitled to compensation.
