Last December, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) encouraged states and the District of Columbia to ban cell phone use while driving, as part of an effort to prevent car accidents caused by distracted driving. The NTSB itself adopted a similar policy, telling its employees that cell phones cannot be used for business communication when the employee is driving.
Around a year ago, the National Safety Council contacted Fortune 500 companies around the country to inquire about their cell phone policies. Out of the 150 companies that responded to their inquiry, a full 20% had already established a cell phone ban. While there is no comprehensive data on how many companies nationwide have cell phone policies in place, the Council has seen an increase in the number of corporate policies involving cell phone use in recent years.
Cell phones are one of the leading causes of car accidents in America. Distracted driving has become an epidemic on par with drunk driving, leading to serious personal injuries and wrongful death. When a distracted driver causes an accident because they were talking or texting on their cell phone, they can and should be held accountable.
