The National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL) is a voluntary organization that represents female lawyers and their families across the United States. The organization works to enhance the system of justice in the United States. Educational programs are held in conjunction with NAWL conferences to ensure that all female lawyers are as highly qualified as possible to represent the judicial system. A quarterly magazine, Women Lawyers Journal, helps to network the female legal population as well. Additionally, NAWL works to improve and advance the interests of women. The social, political, and professional empowerment of women is the long-term goal of the association.
In 1899, before women could even vote, NAWL was first established. Over the years, the most prominent and groundbreaking female lawyers in America boasted membership in the association. The first major project taken on by NAWL was women’s suffrage. Since that accomplishment, the association has been behind countless social and political changes that support equal rights for all. Today, the association is still dedicated to making the necessary changes in the legal system to provide truly equal rights for everyone.
Membership in the association is not limited to female lawyers. Many male legal professionals that are concerned with equal rights join the organization because of its dedication to equal rights for all Americans. NAWL is also renowned for other services that it provides for its members.
