The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) recently performed a new frontal crash test on 18 mid-size family cars. Only two of the 18 models earned “good” ratings – and one of the models will soon leave the market entirely. The Suzuki Kizashi and the 2013 Honda Accord were the only two mainstream sedans to earn good ratings in the car accident test. Eleven other models received “acceptable” ratings, and the rest fell below that standard.
While these results may not seem very impressive, family sedans still outperformed the luxury and near-luxury models that were previously tested by the IIHS. The president of IIHS called the difference in the respective ratings “stunning,” pointing out that 13 of the family sedans offer better crash protection than all but three of the luxury cars tested.
The IIHS regularly develops new, more specialized and severe tests that go beyond federal crash test requirements. Safety experts say that IIHS’s new test reflects a large number of real-world crash scenarios, and is therefore more representative of what really happens in an accident than earlier tests.
