After carrying tourists through the Grand Canyon on a sightseeing tour, a charter bus was on its way back to Las Vegas when it veered off U.S. Highway 93 in Arizona. The 52-year-old driver was killed in the bus accident, which occurred this past Friday night, and three other passengers remain hospitalized. Investigators believe the driver suffered a “medical episode” that caused him to lose control of the bus.
The bus struck a ravine and proceeded to drive up a small hill before lurching and bouncing over rough terrain for over 700 feet. When it finally stopped, the front end was damaged, but the bus was still upright. Although all 48 passengers were injured in some way, 25 of them only suffered minor bruising. As of Saturday night, three of the bus accident victims were still hospitalized – one in serious condition, and two others in fair condition.
The patients who were admitted to the hospital were mostly over the age of 50, according to a hospital spokeswoman. The most common injuries were lacerations and broken bones. Authorities believe most of the passengers were from either Europe or Asia.
