There are currently 2,700 federal and state lawsuits against Pfizer for its dangerous drug, Chantix. These lawsuits claim that Chantix increases suicidal thoughts and other psychiatric disturbances. Pfizer, in an attempt to minimize losses to their company, has taken a $273 million charge to settle 80% of the claims. An additional $15 million has been set aside by Pfizer to finalize the remaining claims.
While this may seem like a decent settlement for these particular victims of Chantix, new research has linked use of this medication to an increased risk for heart attack. It looks as if Pfizer may need to consider setting aside more money for upcoming lawsuits, or consider recalling the drug out of interest for the wellbeing of the public. The latter is highly unlikely.
