An uncertified Los Angeles plastic surgeon recently performed a failed breast augmentation on a 40-year-old woman, leaving her with breast tissue that touched in the middle and created the look of a single breast, or a ‘uniboob.’ But this wasn’t the surgeon’s only surgical mistake. He also performed corrective eyelid surgery on the woman, despite the fact that she had not requested any such procedure.
To make matters worse, the eyelid surgery was also a failure, leaving the woman unable to close her eyes. The woman has sued the surgeon for medical malpractice and collected a settlement which she used for corrective breast surgery, but doctors say that no amount of corrective surgery will be able to repair the damage to her eyelids. She now must take eye medication for the rest of her life in order to keep her eyes from drying out.
When a surgeon makes such a critical error during a routine surgery, and then performs a second procedure without the patient’s permission, this qualifies as serious medical malpractice. We trust physicians to adhere to the highest standards of medical ethics and conduct when performing invasive operations. When a physician shows blatant disregard for that standard of care, they can and should be held accountable for negligence.
