Every morning, school age children wake up early to go to school. Some are dropped off by their guardians while others take the school bus. Others use public transport and walk some distance to school.
The scene at the entrance of schools can be chaotic as numerous children try to make it to their classes on time. Although school zones were designed to ensure the safety of children as well as parents dropping off their kids, they are not as safe as we assume. An estimated 100 children are killed every year as they walk to school. In addition, 25,000 child victims of collisions in school zones suffer serious injuries.
The increased rate of distracted driving makes school zones an increasingly risky place for pedestrians. Research has shown that the effects of distracted driving are similar to those of drunk driving. Statistics show that distracted drivers are at least as dangerous as drunk drivers.
Keeping children safe
Unlike adults, children don’t always follow safe pedestrian practices or traffic laws and with their own increased cell phone usage, they are often distracted as well. For that reason, it is incumbent on parents to teach their children how to be safe as pedestrians, to better understand their surroundings and protect themselves from the dangers posed by motorists.
Children should be taught to:
- Cross streets with great caution. The walk sign doesn’t mean that it is safe to cross. It is important for children to always use extreme caution when crossing even when the walk sign is on.
- Look both ways before crossing. Children should look both ways and ensure that the road is clear before they cross. Always double check to ensure that no vehicles are approaching.
- Never assume that the driver can see them. Children should be taught not to assume that the driver can see them. Research studies have shown that one in every six drivers in school zones is distracted. Children should always ensure that the driver has yielded and come to a complete stop before they cross.
- Keep alert. Always stay alert in parking lots even when you are in a school zone. Staying alert will help children to avoid potential dangers.
It is important to ensure the safety of your children on their way to and from school. If your child has been involved in a school zone accident, call a personal injury attorney in your area to schedule a free case evaluation.
