On August 29th, U.S. district judge Anita Brody announced that a settlement had been reached in a class action brain injury lawsuit filed by former players against the NFL. The NFL will reportedly pay over 4,500 current and former players a combined total of $765 million for damages following concussion and other types of brain injury.
Terms of this historic settlement include:
- $75 million for baseline medical expenses
- $675 million for former players who have suffered brain injury
- $10 million for research and education
The NFL players who were part of this class action, along with their families, know first-hand how brain injury can impact every aspect of life. So too do many families with athletes who do not play professionally but have still sustained cognitive injuries while engaged in their sport.
