As snow fell across the Commonwealth of Virginia from Sunday through Monday morning, state police responded to almost 1,000 car accidents – 881 collisions and 456 calls regarding disabled vehicles. Close to 230 of the car accident calls occurred in the Richmond area. On Monday morning alone, Virginia State Police responded to over 50 accidents in metro Richmond.
A VDOT (Virginia Department of Transportation) truck was involved in a six-vehicle crash on I-95 North in Prince George County. Med-flight was called into transport at least one accident victim to the hospital. The collision resulted in the closure of northbound K-95 for a limited period of time. Another trouble spot was I-295 in Henrico County. Several trucks and cars slid on dangerous patches of block ice and ran off the road into ditches on both sides of the highway.
Winter weather produces dangerous driving conditions that can catch even the most responsible motorists off-guard. However, bad weather alone does not absolve negligent drivers of their responsibility to obey the rules of the road and drive as safely as possible.
