By now, nearly everyone is aware of the statistical danger of talking or texting on your cell phone while driving. However, according to a recent study, it is even more dangerous to daydream while you’re behind the wheel – five times more dangerous. The results surprised the Erie Insurance Group, whose findings revealed that 62% of all fatal distracted driving accidents in the United States are blamed on “being lost in thought.”
In contrast, only 12% of all fatal distracted driving accidents were caused by mobile phone use. The data collected by Erie involved reports on 65,000 fatal car accidents that took place in 2011 and 2012. All in all, around 10% of the total number of deaths fell under the root cause of distracted driving.
As Erie’s senior vice president reiterated to the press, distracted driving encompasses any activity that takes your mind off the road – including daydreaming. In order to prevent serious car accidents from happening, drivers are not only responsible for keeping their eyes on the road, but their full attention as well.
