According to a new study published in the Annals of Pharmacotherapy, blood thinners, used to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke, account for seven percent of medication errors in hospitalized patients.
Medication errors involving blood thinners can result in serious issues including:
- Rapid death of tissue
- Excessive and uncontrollable bleeding
- Worsening of certain types of stroke
- Osteoporosis
- Birth injury
- Death
Edith A Nutescu, PharmD FCCP, from the University of Illinois and one of the study’s authors suggests that these particular medication errors can be reduced by nearly 80 percent when hospitals employ a pharmacist for patient rounds.
