Six students of Bellbrook High School in Sugarcreek Township, Ohio were in the extended cab of a Dodge pick-up just past midnight on Sunday when the truck collided with a tree. The force of the car accident caused the full-grown tree to be uprooted and the truck to buckle, mangling the front end and killing three of the students inside. The three teenagers who survived were rushed to local hospitals.
The driver of the pick-up truck – a 17-year-old boy – was one of the three survivors. Investigators have not yet stated why he lost control of the truck. The fatal car accident was the third deadly traffic crash involving teenagers in just eight days. Three teens in Greenville died in an October 27th car accident, and five days later, a student from Springboro High School died in an accident on his way to school.
Drivers between 17 and 18 years of age with a probationary license are not allowed to drive between 1AM and 5AM under state law, unless it is for work or an emergency. Once authorities complete their investigation, they intend to sit down with the prosecutor to decide if any charges are warranted in the case.
