A toy designed to absorb water and expand to 400 times its original size was voluntarily recalled after a baby ingested it and needed to surgically remove it. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) stated that the marble-sized toy poses an ingestion risk. Once swallowed, it can expand within the stomach and block the small intestine. According to the CPSC, the toys do not show up on x-rays, and require surgery in order to be removed.
The defective products come in many variations, including:
- Walter Balz
- Growing Skulls
- H20 Orbs “Despicable Me”
- Fabulous Flowers
The toys, which were manufactured in both the United States and China, were sold in quantities of six and in the colors red, green, black, blue, and yellow. Health Canada, the CPSC, and the toy’s importer DuneCraft (based in Cleveland) announced the voluntary recall on Monday, and urges consumers to stop using the defective product immediately.
