A tractor-trailer collided with a school bus in southern Nebraska on Wednesday, killing two of the children inside and both drivers. At least four other children were injured in the bus accident. According to officials, the tractor-trailer caught fire during the crash, which took place south of Blue Hill. The school bus was carrying children from the Blue Hill Community School District.
The four injured children were between the ages of 6 and 10 years old, and were quickly taken to a hospital in Hastings, 20 miles north of the accident. One of the injured children was then transferred to Omaha’s Children’s Hospital & Medical Center.
Late Wednesday night, one child was in surgery with first and second degree lacerations and burns. Two other children suffered injuries that were not life threatening, and are currently undergoing treatment. The Nebraska State Patrol reports that the tractor-trailer was hauling hay, but did not have any further details available about the cause of the accident, which is still under investigation.
