The United States Department of Energy is the federal department that is responsible for securing safe energy sources for Americans. The department has the overriding mission to advance the national economic and energy security of the United States; to promote scientific and technological innovation in support of that mission; and to ensure the environmental cleanup of the national nuclear weapons complex.
The Department has four strategic goals that help in accomplishing the mission. These goals include applying advanced science and nuclear technology to the Nation’s defense, promoting a diverse supply and delivery of reliable, affordable, and environmentally sound energy, providing world-class scientific research capacity and advancing scientific knowledge, and providing a responsible resolution to the environmental legacy of the Cold War and by providing for the permanent disposal of the Nation’s high-level radioactive waste. In achieving these goals, every American’s energy needs are protected.
