An employee of Verizon Wireless was working on local power lines in Brooklyn, New York yesterday when he was fatally electrocuted. The deadly work-related accident happened at around 11:30AM on New Lots Avenue, between Mother Gaston Boulevard and Christopher Avenue in Brooklyn.
According to local officials, the 37-year-old employee was inside of a cherry picker when the accident occurred, working on a series of power lines that connected to an electrical pole. He was trying to run the cable, but somehow got caught on the power cable, remaining on the lien for close to a minute. Witnesses heard a pop as his body caught on fire.
Firefighters rushed to the scene, but were too late. A Verizon spokesman says he does not know how the worker came into contact with the power lines. Investigations are still underway, led by Verizon and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
