In the late afternoon on Tuesday, a Glenwood cement truck driver was traveling through the South Side of Chicago and failed to stop at a stop sign. A woman was crossing the street in a motorized wheelchair at the time; the cement truck struck her and caused fatal injuries.
The 60-year-old woman was pronounced dead less than an hour after the pedestrian accident, after being rushed to the John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital in Cook County. The truck driver has been cited for failure to stop at a stop sign, negligent driving, and striking a pedestrian in the crosswalk. No criminal charges have been brought against him, but the accident is still under investigation.
Pedestrian accidents injure around 70,000 people every year across America, and kill close to 4,500 people. Although victims could be anyone, most pedestrian accident fatalities happen to children and the elderly. Since pedestrians do not have any external protection, even a vehicle that is moving at a slow rate of speed can kill them.
