This past January, an avalanche inside the Winter Park, Colorado ski area killed a skier. His wife has now filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Intrawest, the Denver-owned operator of Winter Park’s ski area and other areas around Colorado. According to the wife’s attorney, avalanche danger was high on the day the skier was killed, but Intrawest did not rope off the dangerous area or ensure its safety.
The 28-year-old man reportedly traversed on low-angle terrain underneath a rock outcrop, triggering a 40-foot-wide avalanche that ran 30 vertical feet. Despite the small size and length of the slide, it was enough to bury the man. His father-in-law, who had gone up on the slopes with him, immediately reported him missing, but patrollers didn’t find him until sunset. He was buried in three feet of snow with only one gloved hand visible above the snow.
