An investigation may be pending for Gardasil, the cervical cancer vaccine manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Merck. It has recently been found to cause genital warts.
What is Gardasil?
Gardasil is a vaccine designed to help prevent cervical cancer brought on by human papillomavirus (HPV). The vaccine received FDA approval in June 2006. At that time, Merck claimed that clinical trials had proven Gardasil to be more than 90% effective in preventing the spread of HPV, which is responsible for causing cervical cancer.
The pharmaceutical company has since embarked on an aggressive ad campaign promoting the vaccine, marketing it as a wonder drug which could potentially wipe out most cervical cancers. Gardasil is primarily given to 11 and 12 year-old girls, but it can be administered to any women under the age of 26 who have never contracted HPV.
Adverse Side Effects of Gardasil
In its brief time on the market, Gardasil has come under fire for producing a rather large number of adverse reactions among the girls who have taken the vaccine. There have been over 3,400 complaints of side effects related to Gardasil since it has been approved by the FDA less than three years ago.
The most prominent side effects associated with Gardasil include:
- Blood clots
- Miscarriages
- Death
- Paralysis
- Bells Palsy
- Guillain-Barre Syndrome
- Seizures
There have been 21 deaths associated with Gardasil so far and at least 10 miscarriages have been reported by women shortly after receiving the vaccine.
Genital warts have now been added to this long list of adverse reactions. A recent study has linked the vaccine to outbreaks of genital warts in 78 girls.
In light of the growing list of complications linked to Gardasil, researchers are starting to take a closer look at the vaccine. Many researchers have been questioning whether Gardasil actually prevents cancer. Neither the true extent of the vaccine’s effectiveness nor the scope of its adverse side effects can accurately be determined until long-term studies are conducted. Currently, Gardasil is still to new for these studies to exist.
